Principal’s Report

Kindy Assembly

At the last class assembly, we were treated to a very special item by the Kindergarten 2 group. It is wonderful to see the Kindergarten children develop such confidence to perform and speak in front of such a large audience. We have two more class assemblies before we begin the presentation assemblies. It would be wonderful to see as many parents as possible in attendance. Congratulations to all the merit certificate winners as well.

School Board News

In order for the parent community to know members of the School Board and to gain an understanding of what the School Board does, it has been decided to include a short summary of Board meetings in the newsletter.

The Board meetings agenda is sent to all families in advance so that if an item is of particular interest to you, then you are able to attend the Board meeting or contact one of the Board members to have your opinions brought forward on your behalf.

The minutes from each meeting will also be added to the school website.

Year 6 Fundraising

Thank you to everyone for their great support of all the year six fundraising events this year. On Thursday the 14th November we had a free dress day with $319.20 raised. Part of the curriculum for year six covers economics and it is very beneficial for the children to have real life experiences to learn this from.

New Signs

Thank you to the combined contributions of Mrs Keryl Firby and the P&C in creating some of the new signs around the school. There is one in the entrance to both blocks of girl’s toilets plus different signs in the undercover area and on the veranda. Keryl has done the artist work and the P&C paid for the publishing.

School Mural

Last week the mural on the western side of the cluster building was completed. The artist who completed the work is Stephie Crosby and she can be contacted via her email which is stephanie.crosby@outlook.com. This week Nicole Cotterell completed the display outside the canteen. The fruit and vegetables against the blue background give a much needed lift to that area. Thank you again to both ladies.

Please notify the office if any of your contact details have changed. It is important that we have the correct contact information for Parents/Carer’s and Students for general correspondence and in the case of an emergency.

School Board Update

In the interest of keeping our school community informed of the role that our School Board plays, we would like to keep all parents/carers/guardians updated with topics that the board have discussed and endorsed within the school.

At the most recent School Board meeting held on Monday 11th November, the following items where covered. For more information, please feel free to contact the administration office who can put you in touch with a board member.

• The board discussed our school’s overall NAPLAN results for years 3 and 5. Discussed areas of improvement and compared recent year’s results with other like schools.
• The board discussed and endorsed our revised ‘Sun Smart Policy’.
• The board endorsed the professional development days for 2020.

Prior to this, the board met on 19th August and reviewed the following topics:

• The board discussed and endorsed the charges and contributions for 2020.
• The board endorsed the back to school lists and decided on the preferred supplier for 2020 based on costs and convenience for parents & carers.
• The Board discussed and endorsed the school’s ‘Complaints Management’ policy, the ‘Head Lice’ policy, the ‘Student Homework Guidelines’ policy and finally the ‘Inclement Weather’ policy.

Overall, throughout the course of 2019, here is a brief summary of other topics addressed:

• School budget endorsement.
• School grounds improvements and building works.
• Endorsement of the ‘Student Engagement Policy’.
• Revision and endorsement of the new ‘School Dress Code Policy’ in conjunction with teachers, parents and P&C committee members, in comparison to other like schools.

The school board also welcomed a new community member this year, Councillor Filomena Piffaretti from the City of Bayswater. Filomena brings a wealth of knowledge and valuable contribution to the wellbeing of our school community.

Lost Property

There is quite a big collection of lost property on the veranda outside the Staffroom. Following is a list of items and sizes. Any unclaimed lost property will be discarded at the end of week 6.

2020 Student Requirement Orders Due 22nd November

The cut-off date for orders through Campion is the 22nd November. Late orders will still be accepted but may attract a late fee. If orders are placed by the 22nd November dispatch will be the week ending 6th December 2019.

We are requesting you also pay the school contributions through Campion at this time – these are listed at the end of your child’s requirements list.

Movember

Thank you so much to those who have donated. So far we have raised $300.00. If you are having trouble accessing the link feel free to hand your donation in to the front office. We are raising much-needed funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

Lost Hearing Aid

One of our students has lost their brand new hearing aid. It may have been whilst crossing the oval or out the front of C2. Please return to the office if found.

Christmas Cards and Gifts

Whilst we love seeing children spreading the joy of Christmas through the giving of cards, candy canes and the like we ask that this is kept for the last week of term. It can be quite disruptive to the class. We appreciate your co-operation with this.

Room 1 News

Last Wednesday, Mr Simpson (my father) came to Room One to talk about the Olden Days. He brought many old tools and the children were given the opportunity to use them. The children were able to compare and contrast the old tool with the modern day equivalent. They found drilling and sawing the most difficult but were experts at hammering nails into wood and using a nib and ink to write their name. They were surprised at how long each job took as well as how much energy was needed.

Each child had five questions ready to ask Mr Simpson and he was able to explain what life was like when he was eight years old. Most children were very surprised with some of his answers.

After the interview we went to the oval to play fly. The children were surprised that they could have so much fun with seven sticks.

Mr Simpson had such a good time he went home and made spinning tops for all the class on his woodwork lathe. The children have a lot of fun challenging each other with the tops.

All the children had an educational and fun morning and have written thank you letters to Mr Simpson to show their appreciation.

Zero Waste Lunch

Remember we are currently taking part in No Waste November. Each day a child has a Zero Waste Lunch Box he/she will be given a ticket to go in their class barrel. We will have weekly winners from each class, as well as end of the month winners. The more days the children have Zero Waste Lunch Boxes the more tickets they will have in the barrel, which gives them a greater opportunity to win a prize.

Your children should be able to explain to you what a Zero Waste Lunch Box looks like and be able to help pack healthy zero waste food. I am hoping that everyone will be able to participate in this challenge for some of the days if not for the whole month.

Remember together we can make a difference!

School Banking

Every Wednesday in the Library from 8:15am. Banking books can also be placed in the P&C Drop Box in the office. Banking is with the Commonwealth Bank. Please see Connie in the Library on Wednesday mornings for more information.
