Principal’s Report

I hope everyone has had a great week and feeling excited for the upcoming weeks ahead. This term is certainly moving along quickly with lots of big events happening. Harmony Day is this Friday 22nd March, the Summer Carnival is Friday 29th March and then the year sixes are off to Camp on Wednesday 3rd April. All parents are welcome to cheer on the students down at Altone Park from 9:30am

Special Thank you

At last Wednesday’s assembly we gave a special thank you to Leigh Merrells for his amazing mural in the Library. He volunteered weeks of work to complete the mural. During NAIDOC week last year the students listened to Indigenous Dreaming stories and created artwork about the books. Leigh selected and included the animals in the artwork from the students work. There are 40,000 dots in the painting and significant meaning to each part of the mural.

Thank you also our special guests Katrina Merrells, Antonietta Scriva, Jessica Dunn and Brenda Stack from Balga Primary School who came to join in the celebration. Please feel welcome to come into the Library and spend some time looking at the detail in the work and read about the meaning attached to each part. It has added colour, vibrancy and meaning to our Library. Thank you Leigh!

Staffing

As stated in the previous newsletter Mrs De Jonk is now on long service leave. In Mrs De Jonk’s absence Mrs Adele Salleo and Mr Michael Lee will be sharing the Deputy Principal role doing two days each per week. Mr Toerien has been appointed to cover Mr Lee on Wednesday and Thursday where he will be teaching Health until the end of semester one.

Alfreda Avenue Crossover

Parents please help us by teaching your children that the crossover on Alfreda Avenue on the way to the underpass is not a crosswalk. It is a traffic calming device to slow traffic. The students need to stop and look both ways before they cross. The Administration Staff monitor the crossover after school to assist the students to cross safely on their way to the underpass. If you are with your children can you please teach your children to STOP and give way to the cars so they know the safe way to cross a road.

School Board

The School Board has been finalised and we are happy to announce that Xavier Teo will be continuing as Board Chair this year. He will be supported this year by Antonietta Scriva who will be Deputy Chair of the school Board. We would like to thank Xavier and Antonietta for their commitment and strong support to the School Board. We would also like to welcome Filomena Piffaretti, Shendelle Donetta and Elice O’Mullane to the School Board. The remaining members of the school board include Linda Lawrance, Lara Maas, Claudio Capozzi, Alan Radford, Jessica Owsiak, Marie Gardner, Yvonne Arnott and myself.

Assembly

The next assembly will be hosted on Wednesday the 27th March @ 8:45 by Room 3. Please support the Year 3/4 class by attending the assembly. All are welcome.

Harmony Day

On Friday 22 March we are celebrating Harmony Day. We invite all the children to wear clothing from their cultural heritage. They are also welcome to wear the colour orange, which is the colour of Harmony Day.

As part of our exciting day of activities we are holding a Long Table Lunch for all students and parents/caregivers. To make this event successful we need all students to contribute a plate of food to share. We encourage you to showcase your family culture through culinary delights!

Due to limited heating and refrigeration options at school we ask that perishable food is brought to the under covered area at 12.30pm. Please label any container/dish with your child’s name and class for easy return and bring a serving spoon if your dish requires one. Also bring a picnic rug for your family to share if you want to sit as a family.

Students who have allergies or special diets we ask that you provide your child with their own individual lunch in a labelled container.

Summer Carnival

This year’s Summer Carnival will take place next Friday 29th March. We will be competing against Anzac Terrace and Hillcrest in Flag Belt Rugby League, T20 Blast Cricket, Ultimate Speed Ball (think European Handball combined with Netball!!) and Volleyball. The venue for the day will be Altone Recreation Grounds and we will travel by bus.

The carnival is an all day event for the children in Rooms 6-9. The children will be required to take all their Food and Water for the day. Permission and Information notes have been issued and the Permission Slip will need to be returned before 29th March.

As always Spectators are welcome to attend but keep in mind that FUN and PARTICIPATION are the priorities on the day, please feel free to offer assistance with coaching or umpiring any of our teams.

Jersey Day

In recognition of the start of a new football season, students are asked to come to school wearing a sporting jersey on Thursday 28th March. This event will be run by the Year 6 students who intend to begin raising money for Graduation 2019. Students wearing a jersey are asked to bring a gold coin donation.

Cluster 3

On Monday, the students from Cluster 3 popped on their pirate hats and went on a treasure hunt to search for “gold”. After returning to the classroom, they wrote a recount describing their pirate adventure.

Buddy Classes

Cluster 3, with help from their big buddies Room 8, loved learning how to use the Blue-Bots. Mrs Cunningham and I were amazed at the cooperation and persistence displayed within the group.
